Pianist Echo Lau and Soprano Rebecca Apps Prepare to Compete in National Competition in Halifax.

The Prince Edward Island Registered Music Teachers’ Association (PEIRMTA) recently chose two fine UPEI student musicians to represent PEI at the Annual Convention and Piano and Voice Competitions of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Association (CFMTA), this year to be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, from July 3 to July 5.

Echo Lau and Rebecca Apps will travel to Halifax to participate in the Semi-Final Round of the National Competitions. The Semi-Final Round showcases each provincial/territorial representative performing a forty-five minute program of classical music throughout the day on July 4. Three vocal candidates will then be chosen to compete in the afternoon and three pianists in the evening of July 5 in the Final rounds. The esteemed adjudicators of these prestigious competitions are among Canada’s finest musicians: pianists Andre Laplante, Katherine Chi and Janina Fialkowska, and vocalists Richard Margison, Isabel Bayrakdarian and Mary Lou Falli

Echo Lau was born in Hong Kong and moved to PEI in 2004. She has just recently graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Music Degree. She studied piano with Frances McBurnie throughout her high school years and with Dr. Frances Gray at UPEI during the last four years.
Originally from St. Catharines, Ontario, Rebecca Apps attended St. Lawrence College for musical theatre performance. After attending a Canadian Opera Company audition, she was encouraged to further her studies in the classical music world. she currently attends UPEI where she majors in voice in the under the direction of Sung Ha Shin-Bouey.

In preparation for their trip to Halifax, Echo and Rebecca will give a joint concert at the Dr. Steel Recital Hall, UPEI Campus, on Saturday, June 29 at 7:30 pm. Frances McBurnie will be the collaborative pianist for Rebecca.Tickets will be $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and all proceeds will go to help cover the expenses of the two musicians while they are in Halifax.
